Lionel Messi pidió el voto para “un cambio profundo” en las elecciones presidenciales de Argentina.

Publisher’s rating: Falso

The claim concerned a Facebook post attributing a call to vote for “un cambio profundo” to Lionel Messi ahead of Argentina’s November 19, 2023 presidential runoff between Sergio Massa and Javier Milei. The review reports that the post attributed the quote to Messi and presented it as a publication by Infobae. Infobae’s deputy director told the fact-checkers by email that the outlet had not made that post and that it did not appear on its social media accounts. The image was traced to a September 21, 2023 interview with comedian Migue Granados. The review says the same shirt and background appeared in an Infobae Instagram post about that interview, and that a reverse-image search connected the image to the interview published on YouTube. The reviewers say they checked the recording: Messi and Granados discussed personal and professional topics, including Messi’s family and life in Miami, but not politics or the candidates. The image in the circulating post was therefore a montage, not evidence of a political statement. The review also reports searches for “Messi Massa Milei voto cambio profundo” on Google, Yandex and Bing that returned no results. It concludes that there was no record of Messi making the attributed statement to another outlet either. These checks address both the claimed source of the quote and the underlying interview, rather than relying only on the image’s appearance.
