Im Netz macht ein Video die Runde, in dem Ex-US-Vizepräsident Joe Biden bei einem Wahlkampf-Auftritt die Wiederwahl von US-Präsident Donald Trump unterstützt. Zu hören ist: "We can only re-elect Donald Trump." Trump selbst verbreitet die Aufnahme des Biden-Satzes. Auch im deutschsprachigen Raum ist sie auf sozialen Medien zu finden.

Publisher’s rating: Der Clip ist sinnentstellend gekürzt. Biden will das genaue Gegenteil.

The video did use a real excerpt from Joe Biden’s speech, but the dpa review reports that the clip cut away the surrounding remarks in a way that reversed their meaning. Biden delivered the speech at a campaign rally in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 7, 2020, while competing for the Democratic nomination to challenge Donald Trump. The review says the recording itself had not been technically altered; the problem was the edit and the missing context. The excerpt included Biden saying, “We can only re-elect Donald Trump.” But the next words, omitted from the circulated clip, qualified that statement: he continued, “wenn wir tatsächlich bei diesem kreisförmigen Exekutionskommando hier mitmachen wollen” (“if we actually want to participate in this circular firing squad here”). The review explains that Biden was referring to conflict within the Democratic Party over choosing a challenger. Shortly before the disputed sentence, he had told supporters, “Wir werden Donald Trump schlagen” (“We will beat Donald Trump”). The review identifies the clip’s circulation and amplification: Trump adviser Dan Scavino first posted it on Twitter and Facebook on March 7 local time, and Trump later amplified it with a retweet over the weekend. These details describe the spread of the edited excerpt; they do not change what Biden’s surrounding remarks conveyed.
