Jubilee party candidate won the Kiambaa parliamentary by-election

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

Research from related reporting says the claim is false: Jubilee candidate Kariri Njama did not win the 2021 Kiambaa parliamentary by-election. The report identifies Kiambaa as a contest between Jubilee, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, and the camp associated with his then-deputy, William Ruto. It says Jubilee nominated Njama and UDA fielded John Njuguna Wanjiku. The report gives the vote totals as 21,773 for Wanjiku and 21,263 for Njama, a difference of 510 votes. It states that Wanjiku’s victory handed UDA the seat. Thus, although Jubilee’s candidate contested the by-election, the reported result was a win for UDA, not Jubilee. The excerpt attributes the totals to IEBC records, but does not describe an independent verification method.

Photo of Asaduddin Owaisi meeting Amit Shah in relation to upcoming UP elections

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim is that a photo shows AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi meeting Amit Shah in connection with the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections. FACTLY’s review says the image is a composite made from two separate photographs, not evidence of such a meeting. The review traces the two people in the image to different settings. Shah’s image came from a 2020 photograph of him meeting Capt. Amarinder Singh about farmers’ issues. Owaisi’s image came from a photograph of him with his brother Akbaruddin Owaisi and Hyderabad officials, during a discussion for which Owaisi submitted a memorandum about constructing bridges near Nayapul. The review therefore says the pictured encounter did not take place as represented. FACTLY also reports that searches for images of Owaisi and Shah together did not find a matching photograph, and that reverse-image searches of the separately cropped figures led to the two different source images. It adds that it found no recent news articles reporting a meeting between the men over a political deal. The review’s evidence addresses the specific image, rather than denying that Owaisi was preparing for the UP elections.

Photo of an AAP campaign banner in Gujarat which reads – ‘Gujarat will read namaz’

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a photo presented as an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) campaign banner in Gujarat, bearing the message “Gujarat will read namaz.” FACTLY says the photo was edited: the original banner’s Gujarati text, “Now Gujarat will change,” was replaced with the namaz wording, and additional text criticizing religious practices was inserted. The review also reports that the banner image of AAP Gujarat president Gopal Italia was altered. To check the image, FACTLY reports running the viral photo through Google Reverse Image Search and comparing it with similar banner photos. It says AAP Gujarat had clarified that the viral photo was fake, and that party spokesperson Yogesh Jadvani posted the original poster design after the edited image circulated. The comparison identified the altered wording and the inserted text; the review further says the Gopal Italia image had been replaced with a photo of Mullah Krekar. The review’s conclusion is that the circulated photo does not show an authentic AAP Gujarat campaign banner with the claimed wording. It says other similar banner photos from different locations did not contain the religious text found in the viral image. Thus, the claim rests on an edited image rather than the original campaign design.
