Publisher’s rating: False
The claim concerned Sajith Premadasa, then Sri Lanka’s opposition leader, and alleged that he told Parliament that people protesting around the country were doing so to put him in the presidency. The review identifies the circulated posts and says it checked whether he had made such a statement in connection with the recent protests: “රට පුරා අරගල කරන ජනතාව, තමාව ජනපති පුටුවේ වාඩි කිරීමට ඇගිලි ගනිමින් සිටින බවත් ඔවුන් වෙනුවෙන් තමාද පෙනී සිටින බව සජිත් ප්රේමදාස මහතා පාර්ලිමේන්තු සැසිවාරයක් අතුලත පැවසු ආකාරයයි.” The review reports that Premadasa made a special statement in Parliament after it reconvened on April 5, following protests that spread after the president’s private residence was besieged. It says the statement called for abolishing the executive presidency, not for making Premadasa president: “එහිදී විපක්ෂනායකවරයා විසින් රටේ පවතින තත්ත්වය පිළිබදව විශේෂ ප්රකාශයක් සිදු කළා. The article points readers to the parliamentary video, specifically minutes 11–13, and says the claimed appeal to put him in the top office is not in it. The review also describes checking mainstream media coverage and contacting Premadasa’s media unit. It says neither supported the attributed statement: “අප විසින් ඔහු මෙවැනි ආකාර ප්රකාශයක් මෑතදී පැවැත්වෙන ජනතා උද්ඝෝෂණ සම්බන්ධයෙන් පවසා ඇද්දැයි ප්රධාන ධාරාවේ මාධ්යවල නිරීක්ෂණය කළා. The review distinguishes this from Premadasa’s separate statement that his party was prepared to take responsibility for the country if the government could not resolve problems; that is not evidence that protesters were demonstrating to make him president.

The review examines whether Lebanon’s parliamentary election could be disrupted if the state electricity utility could not supply polling and counting locations. It reports that former Energy Ministry official Ghassan Baydoun called for fuel shipments to keep power plants operating, in response to concerns that electricity shortages could interfere with the election. The review does not report that the election was actually cancelled or delayed; it assesses the risk raised by the shortage.
