The claim concerned a photo presented as showing United National Party chairman Wajira Abeywardana and others meeting Gnanasara Thero to win support for Ranil Wickremesinghe ahead of the parliamentary vote to choose a successor president. The review places the allegation in the run-up to the July 20, 2022 secret ballot, in which Wickremesinghe was a candidate. It says the image was being circulated as evidence of a recent meeting for that purpose. The investigation traced the image to a different event in 2017, not to election lobbying. It identifies the setting as Gintota, where Abeywardana and others went to meet Gnanasara Thero at the Thūpārāma temple. The stated purpose was to invite him to the district secretariat for discussions aimed at resolving Sinhala-Muslim tensions following unrest in the area. The review also says the photo had circulated in 2017 in connection with those discussions. The review reports that both the media secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena and Abeywardana’s media office said there had been no recent meeting between the UNP and Gnanasara Thero. Both identified the image as one from the 2017 Gintota episode. On that evidence, the photo does not substantiate the claim that the meeting occurred to secure support for Wickremesinghe in 2022; its earlier event and purpose were presented misleadingly.

The review investigated a document circulated on social media under the UNP letterhead, presented as a list of district leaders appointed to coordinate MPs and election operations for the parliamentary vote to choose Sri Lanka’s next president. The article places the claim immediately before the scheduled 20 July 2022 vote, in which then-acting president Ranil Wickremesinghe was a candidate. It describes the circulating document as a purported UNP-issued letter, not as an independently verified party announcement. To check the document’s origin, the publisher says it contacted the UNP’s media coordinators. They said the party had not issued the letter and described it as fabricated. The article also reports that the party’s official Facebook page addressed the letter. As a further check, the review says it asked several MPs named as district leaders. Namal Rajapaksa said he had not received such a letter and that it was false; the media offices of Kanaka Herath, Johnston Fernando and Sarath Weerasekara likewise said they had received no such letter or notice from the UNP. The article’s conclusion therefore rests on the party’s denial and the reported responses from people named in the document.
