Tem Base? O PopularElections & voting

Rs. 350 would be deducted from the bank accounts of people who will not cast their votes – Election Commission of India

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerned a newspaper clipping stating that Rs. 350 would be taken from the bank accounts of people who did not cast their votes, supposedly under an Election Commission of India decision. FACTLY traced the clipping to a Navbharat Times item and reported that it was fictional, rather than an announcement of an official penalty. FACTLY says it searched for news about the purported Election Commission decision and found no relevant official information. It also cites a PIB fact-check tweet stating that the Commission had taken no such decision, and an earlier Election Commission tweet identifying the same clipping as fake news being recirculated. These findings directly challenge the claim that the deduction was an actual government measure. The review further reports that Navbharat Times clarified the item was a Holi joke. It says the original page described its news as fictional and included a notice telling readers not to take the article seriously. Taken together, the review’s account identifies the clipping’s origin and the subsequent clarifications, rather than evidence of any real deduction from voters’ bank accounts.

Publisher’s rating: Falso

The claim concerned a social-media message alleging that Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) was temporarily cancelling voter registration titles. The message also included a link to a page that purportedly let recipients regularize their electoral status by supplying personal information. The review says the message began circulating that week and reached groups of retired military police officers in the Federal District; members of one group suspected a scam and warned others. To check the claim, Metrópoles says its V ou F team contacted the TSE. The court then published an alert on its own website, describing the content as false and as a scam intended to harm people who believed it. The review quotes the TSE explaining that the Electoral Justice system does not notify people of title cancellations or registration irregularities by email or messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Telegram, and does not request personal data through those channels. The practical distinction in the review is between an unsolicited message seeking personal information and checking one’s registration through an official channel. The TSE said people seeking information should contact the Electoral Justice system on their own initiative. The review also points to the TSE’s free online voter self-service page for checking registration status and other electoral information.

Publisher’s rating: Verdadeiro

The claim concerned whether voters in Brazil’s Federal District could obtain a second copy of their voter registration card by Thursday, September 22, 2022. The Metrópoles investigation examined both how the card could be issued and whether that deadline applied in the district. It reported that a congressional candidate had said voters could print the card through the Superior Electoral Court’s online service, and had shared an image stating the September 22 deadline. To check the online-printing part, the article says its team consulted the TSE’s voter self-service tool and found an option to print the card. It also reports a qualification from the TSE: applicants had to be in good standing with the Electoral Court, without outstanding debts such as fines for missing elections or electoral work. Na aba de autoatendimento ao eleitor, há a opção de imprimir o título.”; “Segundo o Tribunal, para a emissão da segunda via, o eleitor deve estar quite com a Justiça Eleitoral, sem débitos pendentes”) For the deadline, the article says it sought information from the Regional Electoral Court of the Federal District (TRE-DF) and found confirmation on that court’s website that a second copy could be requested through Thursday the 22nd. Thus, the investigation supports the deadline claim while also noting that eligibility required electoral standing.
