Suresh Chavhanke’s daughter has secured the top rank in the UPSC examination by studying at Jamia Millia University

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns the woman shown in a social-media post, which said Suresh Chavhanke’s daughter had ranked first in the UPSC examination after studying at Jamia Millia University. FACTLY identifies the woman as Shruti Sharma and distinguishes her coaching at Jamia from her family relationship: it reports that she prepared at Jamia Millia Islamia’s Residential Coaching Academy, but was not Chavhanke’s daughter. The review identifies her as the topper of the Civil Service Examination 2021, with All-India Rank 1. (S1: “The photo shows Shruti Sharma, the topper of the Civil Service Examination 2021.”; “Shruti Sharma prepared for the Civil Services Exam at Jamia Millia Islamia Residential Coaching Academy (RCA).”; “Shruti Sharma is not the daughter of Suresh Chavhanke.”) The investigation describes identifying the woman in the image as Shruti Sharma and checking reports and photographs concerning her family and education. It says reports identify her father as Sunil Dutt Sharma, an architect who runs a construction consultancy firm in Delhi. It also says she attended St. Stephen’s College of Delhi University and joined the Delhi School of Economics for postgraduate study. These details support the review’s distinction between her actual father and the person named in the post. (S1: “When we searched for the details of the claims made in the post, we found that the woman seen in the image is Shruti Sharma, the topper of the Civil Service Examination 2021.”; “As per the reports, Shruti Sharma’s father is Sunil Dutt Sharma, an architect who runs a construction consultancy firm in Delhi.”; “Shruti Sharma is an alumnus of St. Stephen’s College of Delhi University and joined the Delhi School of Economics (DSE) to pursue her post-graduate degree.”) The key context is that the post combines a true detail about Sharma’s coaching with a false claim about her parentage. FACTLY says she did prepare at Jamia’s coaching academy, but concludes that she is not related to Chavhanke. Thus, the institution named in the post does not establish the alleged family connection. (S1: “To sum it up, UPSC topper Shruti Sharma did prepare for the Civil Service Exam at Jamia Millia University, but she is not the daughter of Sudarshan TV Head Suresh Chavhanke.”)

Modified Passing Criteria Applicable for MBBS Exams Held only After September 1, 2023: NMC clarification

Publisher’s rating: Not true

The review examines reports that the NMC had withdrawn its amended MBBS passing criteria. It says the Commission did not withdraw the amendment; rather, its clarification was that the changes would not apply retrospectively. The distinction matters: the modified criteria remained in place for exams held after September 1, 2023, but were not to be applied to exams held before that date. The review says the notice was issued by Shambhu Sharan Kumar, Director of the NMC Undergraduate Medical Education Board, on October 3, 2023. The change concerned subjects with two papers. The review describes the earlier CBME curriculum as requiring at least 50% in aggregate across both papers, and quotes the September 1 corrigendum as lowering that aggregate threshold to 40%. It also reports a separate requirement for passing a subject: 50% overall, with the specified minimum split between university examinations in theory and practical components. These are distinct criteria, and the clarification about retrospectivity did not itself withdraw either change. The review’s account relies on the public notice and on explanations attributed to NMC sources. It quotes the notice as saying retrospective effect was “not possible,” and says the sources explained that the amended rules would not cover exams held before the amendment. On that basis, the review treats the claim of withdrawal as a mischaracterization: the criteria were amended, but their application was limited by the date of the exam.

"Ich gehöre ja noch zu denen, die Noten behalten wollen. Die Grünen sind ja offen dafür, Noten abzuschaffen. Ich halte das - (Zwischenruf Hartmann: 'Nein') - übrigens für einen grundlegenden Fehler, Noten abzuschaffen."

Publisher’s rating: Söder liegt hier richtig.
