Publisher’s rating: Pinocchio andante
At the Atreju event in Rome, Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said that 32 per cent of Italy’s GDP was export of “made in Italy” products and that tourism accounted for another 15 per cent. The review says both figures overstate the contributions, and explains that the export claim confuses total exports with the net exports used in calculating GDP. The review’s account of the GDP calculation says it combines household, institutional and public consumption, investment, and net exports—that is, exports minus imports. It reports that net exports were about €44 billion, or 2.5 per cent of GDP, in 2018, and about €55 billion, or 3 per cent, in 2019. Those figures are far below 32 per cent. The review distinguishes that measure from total exports: it says the latter were roughly one-third of GDP in 2019, but argues that this does not mean exports make up one-third of GDP. The distinction matters because total exports do not subtract imports, whereas the net-export component in the GDP calculation does. For tourism, the review reports that Istat figures for 2017 put the value added to GDP by the tourism share of activities such as hotels, restaurants and transport at €93 billion, about 6 per cent of GDP. Including related activity that is not exclusively attributable to tourists raises the estimate to 13.4 per cent, still below 15 per cent. The review thus contrasts a narrower tourism contribution with a broader estimate that includes spillover activity, rather than treating the broader figure as wholly attributable to tourism.

KBC and Reliance Jio offers 25 lakh rupees as lottery
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The claim concerned a circulating message saying that a “KBC-Jio Department” was organizing a lottery worth 25 lakh rupees. The review states that it found no such offer and describes the message as a fake lottery claim. To check it, the review searched online for information about a KBC lottery and found a Delhi Police webpage on KBC Lottery Frauds. According to the review’s account of that webpage, a claim that a mobile number had won a 25-lakh-rupee lottery jointly organized by Kaun Banega Crorepati and Reliance Jio was a fraud. The webpage warned that messages saying someone had won a lottery or prize were, in all likelihood, fraudulent. The review also points to reports of similar KBC scams, including a Mumbai housewife who was lured into paying 3.85 lakh rupees on the pretext that she had won a KBC lottery, and a PIB Fact Check post about similar messages circulating through calls, emails, and messages. These examples provide context for the warning; the review’s central evidence is that it found no such joint lottery and that Delhi Police identified the described kind of winning claim as fraudulent.

The claim concerned a social-media message offering to have a Litro technical officer visit a home and confirm a gas cylinder’s safety within 24 hours. The review investigated the message’s listed district-representative phone numbers and whether Litro had launched the advertised inspection arrangement. It reports that the numbers had originally appeared in a post by the Socialist Youth Union, for contacting district members about joining its JVP Youth programme—not as Litro representatives. The review says a JVP Youth national committee member, Bandula Pushpakumara, told it that numbers used in a promotional campaign had been misused by presenting them as part of a Litro announcement. It also says the Litro general manager denied that the company had started a cylinder-inspection programme and denied any connection between Litro and the listed numbers. The article distinguishes the alleged home-inspection scheme from a separate Litro service: it says the company had introduced 1311 for complaints relating to gas cylinders after recent gas-related accidents. Its conclusion is that Litro had not begun the advertised district-representative inspection project and that the numbers belonged to the youth organisation’s district representatives.
The claim concerns a Facebook post from late October 2021 that presented itself as a Lidl Deutschland giveaway. It promised a gift to people who selected a number from a picture. The review describes the post as saying, “Heute wählt Lidl Deutschland die ersten 100 Glücklichen” and “Wählen Sie eine Glückszahl und Sie erhalten ein Geschenk entsprechend dem Inhalt der BOX.” It also notes that users were still commenting with numbers in late November. The review examined whether this particular promotion was genuine, rather than giveaways in general. The review points to signs on the Facebook page itself: it says the page did not identify who operated it and had no legal notice with an address or contact details. It further reports that Facebook’s “Page transparency” information showed the page had been created on 26 October 2021, and that it had published only one post. The review contrasts this with Lidl’s official Facebook page, where it says the giveaway could not be found. These observations address the specific post’s provenance: the review describes an unidentifiable, newly created page using Lidl’s logo, rather than a promotion found on Lidl’s established official page. It also notes that the official page had a verification badge, which it describes as a small white check on a blue background. The review warns, citing consumer-protection and police guidance, against providing personal information in dubious giveaway offers.
Video showing plastic rice production in a rice mill
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The reviewed post presented a video of machinery producing small, grain-shaped pellets as footage of plastic rice being made in a rice mill. The review says the video instead shows plastic granulation at a South Korean company. It describes the pellets as recycled plastic granules used to cushion fragile objects during storage and transportation, rather than rice. The review concludes that the video does not show plastic-rice production. [S1]

The claim refers to Alex Kushnir’s statement that investor transactions fell to 13% after Israel raised the purchase tax on investment homes in 2015. The Globes investigation examined what happened to investors’ share of home purchases after that change; it cautioned that the figures alone cannot establish that the tax caused the change. The investigation used Finance Ministry figures based on Tax Authority data. It reports that the tax increase took effect on 24 June 2015, raising the basic rate for buyers of homes other than their sole residence from 5% to 8%. Investors’ share of purchases was 26.7% in 2015, compared with 26.3% in 2014, and then fell over subsequent years to 12.9% in 2019. The 13% figure therefore closely matches the reported low, but it describes the share of homes bought by investors, not proof that the tax itself produced the decline. The review identifies a relevant qualification: the Contractors Association said that a substantial share of new homes offered for sale from 2015 to 2020 were part of the Price for the Tenant program, which investors could not buy. The review reports this as a possible alternative factor, not as a demonstrated cause. Its conclusion is that the figure is accurate but needs that context.

The review examined a social-media post claiming that the All Ceylon Restaurant Owners’ Association had raised the price of plain tea by five rupees because vegetable prices had increased. It checked how mainstream media reported the announcement and reviewed a video of association president Asela Sampath speaking at a media briefing in Colombo on November 22. The review says the reports it checked covered price increases for rice packets and tea but did not attribute the tea increase to rising vegetable prices. In the video, Sampath linked vegetable costs to increases in rice packets and fried rice, while giving different reasons for increasing the price of plain tea.
