Post sobre desabrigados pelas chuvas no Maranhão traz quatro fotos de alagamentos.

Publisher’s rating: Enganoso

The post paired four flood photographs with a claim about people left homeless by the rains in Maranhão. The investigation found that the images did not all document the current flooding: only one was taken in 2024. It also reported that, although the rains had affected thousands of families and led dozens of cities to declare emergencies, the state government said there were no reports of people in shelters at the time covered by the review. The investigation traced the photographs to different events and sources. The first, showing two adults in a canoe, had appeared in coverage of rains in Maranhão and Pará in March 2023; the original, uncropped image showed a third person in the canoe. The second, an aerial view of a bridge destroyed by water, was the only image from 2024 and had appeared in TV Mirante and G1 Maranhão coverage. The remaining pictures were also older. The third showed residents trying to save a freezer during flooding and had been used in a 2018 report about rains in Maranhão. The fourth, showing two boys on a flooded street, was a screenshot from TV Mirante coverage of state flooding in March 2023. Thus, the post combined images from different dates and situations, presenting them as though they all illustrated the current event.
