The image under review was presented as showing Tom Cruise with his stunt doubles, but the investigation found that the supposed doubles were not real people. The image had been shared in early June in the Facebook group Midjourney Official, a group described as being for the image-generation application. The review reports that Midjourney creates images from written prompts. Although the original post could no longer be found in the group, the fact-checkers used an archived version identified through Lead Stories. It contained the viral Cruise image and several other generated images of Cruise with supposed doubles. The person who devised the prompt, Ong Hui Woo, said on June 9 that the images were AI-generated. Woo explained that the idea came from a dream about Cruise’s stunt doubles and that the image had been posted in a group where Woo expected members to recognize AI images. The article also reports clues that challenged the image’s apparent authenticity. Woo’s description called it the “MI7 premiere afterparty,” while the review says the film’s stunt credits did not list doubles or stunt drivers resembling the men shown. Taken together with Woo’s account and the archived set of generated images, the evidence supports the conclusion that the image is synthetic rather than a photograph of Cruise with actual stunt doubles.
