Indian Police brutality at a madrassa in Uttar Pradesh.

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a video circulated as showing Indian police attacking people at a madrassa in Uttar Pradesh. FACTLY’s review examined that specific video and concluded that the incident shown took place in Bangladesh in 2013, not India. The review identifies the event as an attack during a Hefazat-e-Islam gathering; it does not describe the footage as an incident at a madrassa in Uttar Pradesh. To trace the video, the review says it checked screenshots using Google Reverse Image Search and found a YouTube upload of the same video from 2013. The upload’s description placed the event on the night of May 5–6, 2013, and referred to Bangladesh police and other security forces attacking a Hefazat-e-Islam meeting. The review also points to the letters “RAB” visible on police riot gear at 1:45 in the video, identifying them as the insignia of Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion. These clues support the review’s finding that the video was misattributed to India.

UP Police brutality.

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerned a video circulating as footage of Uttar Pradesh Police using force against anti-CAA protesters. FACTLY’s review says the incident depicted did not take place in Uttar Pradesh: it identifies the location as Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), and concludes the police in the video were not UP Police. The review describes two steps in checking the video. Screenshots were searched with Yandex Reverse Image Search, which returned the same video. The review then says a YouTube upload described the incident as having taken place in Muzaffarabad on 22 October 2019. Searching relevant keywords also led to an ANI News video with matching visuals and a title identifying police brutality during a protest in Muzaffarabad. Together, the reported location, matching footage, and identification of the police contradict the claim that the video shows UP Police.
