Claim: These pictures not related with the recent IT raid held at SP Velumani residence

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The review investigated photos shared as showing cash and gold seized at former minister S.P. Velumani’s home during a raid by Tamil Nadu’s Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption. It says the images were old pictures from different searches and other settings, rather than evidence of what was found at Velumani’s residence. The review also notes that the post it examined was shared on August 10, 2021. [S1: “அ. To check the images, the article reports using reverse-image searches. It identifies two pictures of piles of gold bars as images taken at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and a photograph of banknotes on a bed as one taken in Karnataka in 2016 and published by ANI. It says another image of bundles of new ₹2,000 and ₹500 notes had been used as a representational image by news outlets for years, though its original location could not be established. அசல் பதிவைக் காண: newyorkfed.org I Archive 1 I businessinsider.com I Archive 2 தங்கக் கட்டிகள் குவியலாக இருக்கும் படங்கள் இரண்டும் அமெரிக்காவின் ஃபெடரல் ரிசர்வ் பேங்க் ஆஃப் நியூயார்க்கில் எடுக்கப்பட்டது என்று செய்திகள் நமக்குக் கிடைத்தன.”] The article gives further examples of images it says were misattributed to the Velumani raid: a gold toilet associated with Britain’s Blenheim Palace, cash photographed during a 2019 search at the Kalki Bhagwan ashram, and boxes of cash found during a 2016 search at Sekar Reddy’s home. Its conclusion is that the circulated pictures were not evidence of cash or gold seized at Velumani’s home. I This picture is not related with the IT raid held at SP Velumani residence

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerned a photograph of bundles of cash and gold jewellery shared as showing what authorities seized at former Tamil Nadu minister S. P. Velumani’s home. The review places the image in the context of searches by the state Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption at 52 locations, including Velumani’s residence. It says a social-media post described the items as money seized from “our Velumani’s house.” The review’s conclusion is that the photograph did not show those searches. To investigate, Fact Crescendo says it conducted a reverse-image search and found the same photo circulating in news and social-media posts since 2016. It then compared the image with pictures published by news outlets and found that Hindustan Times had used it in a report dated December 11, 2016. According to the review, that report identified the image as a Press Trust of India photograph and described it as showing cash and jewellery recovered in a raid on a hawala dealer’s home in Karnataka—not at Velumani’s residence. The review also notes that the same image had been misrepresented as showing a seizure at Tamil Nadu businessman Sekar Reddy’s home, and says its earlier coverage had addressed that attribution. Its stated conclusion is that the image was taken in connection with a 2016 raid in Karnataka and was falsely presented as evidence from the searches at Velumani’s home.
