Zee News’ video clip showing Sudhir Chaudhary reporting the arrest of Narendra Modi in a pornography case

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a purported Zee News clip in which Sudhir Chaudhary appears to report that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was arrested by Mumbai Crime Branch police in a pornography case. FACTLY’s investigation found that the clip was doctored: it altered a Zee News report about the arrest of Mumbai businessman Raj Kundra, not Modi. The review says Kundra was arrested in July 2021 on allegations of producing pornographic films. To investigate the clip, FACTLY says it searched for reports of Modi’s arrest and found none. It also inspected the video, noting a “sonu_shitposting” watermark, then located the same video on that Instagram page, where it had been posted on 13 October 2021. The review identifies the page as a meme account and says the clip was made by editing the audio of the original Zee News video. The original report’s subject is supported by the words attributed to Chaudhary in the unaltered footage: he names Raj Kundra and says Mumbai Crime Branch police arrested him on allegations of making obscene films. Thus, the clip’s apparent report about Modi changes the person named in the underlying report; the review concludes Modi was not arrested in such a case.
