Pictures showing the illegal money, unaccounted ornaments and documents seized during the raid on Lalu Prasad Yadav’s house

Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING

The claim concerns a collage of five images circulated as pictures of illegal money, jewellery and documents seized during a raid on Lalu Prasad Yadav’s house. The review found that the collage mixed images from separate enforcement actions: three pictures were not from the searches connected to Yadav’s family, while two did come from those searches. The images therefore did not collectively show what the post claimed. The review describes using reverse-image searches to trace the pictures. The first image matched a photograph published in September 2022 about an Enforcement Directorate raid on an e-gaming firm in Kolkata, where more than Rs. 17 crore in unaccounted cash was reported recovered. Two other images matched photographs published in March 2023 about jewellery and cash recovered during raids on Ponzi-scheme operators in Nagpur and Mumbai. Those three images came from events distinct from the searches concerning Yadav’s family. The remaining two images were traced to an ANI post about the ED’s searches at locations allegedly associated with Yadav’s family in the railways land-for-job investigation. The review reports that those searches took place on 10 March 2023 at 24 locations, and that the ED reported recovering unaccounted cash, foreign currency and gold. This supports a limited part of the collage’s attribution, but not the post’s presentation of all five images as evidence from that operation. The review also distinguishes the reported estimate of approximately Rs. 600 crore in proceeds of crime detected during the searches from the specific cash and valuables the ED said it recovered.
