Publisher’s rating: Enganoso

The montage combined material about TJ-MG judge Alexandre Victor de Carvalho: a report on the 2020 corruption allegation, an excerpt of a 2015 intercepted conversation with Alexandre de Moraes, and footage concerning Carvalho’s role in the Minas Gerais electoral court. It overlaid those clips with claims that the wiretap showed Moraes lobbying to free Lula and that this helped Lula gain freedom and the presidency. The review found no evidence in the montage to support that political connection: it reported that Lula was not mentioned in the compiled audio or video excerpts, and that his name appeared only in text placed over the images. The underlying events were real, but their chronology and outcomes matter. The review says the MPF denounced Carvalho for passive corruption in April 2020, based on an investigation begun in 2015. The allegation concerned supposed exchanges of favors and appointments for family members; the complaint was archived by the STJ on May 17, 2023, which found insufficient evidence that Carvalho had influenced a judicial appointment in exchange for legislative jobs. The review also says the 2015 interception concerned a separate case involving Carvalho, and that Moraes reassured him about its progress while serving as São Paulo’s public-security secretary. That account does not establish a connection to Lula. Carvalho did serve in the TRE-MG: he was a substitute member from July 2017 to June 2019, then became vice-president and electoral-court inspector; he became the court’s president in June 2020 and remained in the role until 2021. The review notes that he was no longer part of the electoral court during the 2022 election in which Lula was elected. Thus, the montage’s component footage and events do not substantiate its added claim linking Moraes, Carvalho’s cases, and Lula.

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a video said to show a Muslim man harassing a Hindu girl in Ahmedabad, after which she beat him in public. The review identifies the circulating clip as showing a student hitting a young man with a belt and says the allegation was shared with a communal framing. Its conclusion is that the victim and accused belonged to the same community, so the claim’s religious identification of them was false. The review names the accused as Vijay Sarkate. (The source describes the student as a minor in its account of the incident.) To investigate, the reviewers say they searched Google using keywords related to the claim. They found Times Now reporting about an Ahmedabad case and compared its account with the video: that report described a minor student and her older sister confronting a man accused of harassing the student. The review also cites a 25 June report by One India, which identified the accused as Vijay Sarkate. These accounts support that the clip was connected to a harassment complaint, but do not support the claim’s communal identities. The review then reports contacting Kagadapith police station. The police station’s PSO confirmed the accused’s name and said a case had been registered and he had been presented in court; the PSO also stated that there was no communal angle and that the victim and accused were from the same community. The review concludes that a student beat a man accused of harassing her, but that the video was being misleadingly circulated with a communal claim.

The claim concerns a photograph circulated online that purportedly shows Nahel, the 17-year-old killed by a police officer in Nanterre, posing with a gun. The review says the image was shared in several languages on Facebook and Twitter, with posts mocking Nahel and presenting the pictured young man as him. Its investigation concludes that the photograph does not show Nahel. To trace the image, the review reports using reverse image search. It found the photograph circulating from June 21, 2023, on social media and in Arabic-language articles, including posts by local journalists and news services. The same image also appeared in Haaretz and on Palestinian websites. This trail links the image to reporting about Ashraf Al-Saadi, rather than to the events in France. The review identifies the person in the photograph, according to those local media and journalists, as 17-year-old Palestinian activist Ashraf Al-Saadi. Those reports said he was one of three Palestinians killed in an Israeli army drone attack near Jenin, in the northern West Bank, on June 21, 2023. The review also says that photographs of Nahel in media coverage show different facial characteristics, including the nose, ears and eyebrows. Together, the image’s documented circulation and the reported visual comparison undermine the claim that the armed young man pictured is Nahel.
