Recent visuals of police apprehending two Muslim women in connection with the recent Nuh (Mewat) violence

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a video circulated after communal violence in Haryana’s Nuh district in late July 2023. It was presented as showing police apprehending two Muslim women in connection with that violence. The review says the video instead showed an earlier police action in Haryana, and that the footage had no connection to the Nuh events. Its account identifies the women as family members of a person accused in a cow slaughter case, not as people apprehended in connection with the recent Nuh violence. [S1: “a video depicting a policeman arresting two women and wielding a stick has been widely shared as the recent instance of police apprehending two Muslim women in connection with the recent Nuh (Mewat) violence.”; “This video depicts an incident that occurred three years ago in April 2020, in Utawar village, Palwal district, Haryana.”; “The viral video holds no connection with the recent Nuh violence.”] To investigate the footage, the review describes conducting a reverse image search on keyframes from the video. It says this led to the same video, uploaded by multiple users on Twitter on 24 April 2020; one user attributed it to Utawar village in Palwal district. The review then says it used keyword searches to find an Aaj Tak report, which placed the incident in April 2020 in Uttawar village. [S1: “Upon conducting a reverse image search of the viral video’s keyframes, we arrived at the same video that had been uploaded on Twitter on 24 April 2020 by multiple users (here & here).”; “One user who shared the video attributed it to an incident from Utawar village in the Palwal district of Haryana.”; “Taking a cue from this, we conducted a keyword search and came across an article by Aaj Tak.”] According to the review’s account of that reporting, police had gone to the village to locate a person accused of cow slaughter. The review says the accused person’s family members were apprehended on suspicion of involvement in a related case, then released the same day. That chronology and the video’s 2020 provenance distinguish this footage from the claimed response to the 2023 Nuh violence. [S1: “the Utawar police had ventured into the village on a mission to locate a criminal accused of cow slaughter.”; “they had apprehended the family members of the accused during that period, suspecting their involvement in connection with a previous case of cow slaughter. However, they were subsequently released on the very same day.”]
