The fact-check investigates a viral sharepic claiming that 157,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed and 18,480 Russian soldiers had died. It notes that wartime casualty totals are difficult to determine and that some reported figures combine deaths and injuries, so figures labelled “losses” cannot automatically be compared with death counts. The sharepic also presented other claims, including deaths among NATO personnel, and listed military-equipment losses. The investigation traced the figures to an article on the Turkish website Hurseda Haber. That article attributed them to alleged Israeli intelligence service Mossad data, but the review found that the information had not been reported elsewhere and that there was no evidence Mossad had supplied it. Hurseda Haber also referred vaguely to “agencies” without identifying them. The review therefore found no substantiation for the sharepic’s figures in the stated provenance. To assess the casualty numbers against other available estimates, the review cited estimates and statements from named officials and media reporting. In January 2023, Norway’s defence minister referred to 180,000 Russian dead or wounded and 100,000 Ukrainian military dead or wounded, as well as 30,000 Ukrainian civilian deaths. Other cited estimates likewise put Russian deaths or combined casualties far above 18,480. These comparisons are not like-for-like death counts, a limitation the review expressly notes; they nevertheless do not validate the sharepic’s precise numbers. The review also checked related claims on the sharepic. NATO says it provides support but does not send troops to Ukraine, and the review noted that the Ukrainian air force did not possess as many aircraft as the sharepic claimed had been destroyed. Those checks bear on the sharepic’s broader reliability, rather than independently establishing exact death totals. The evidence presented does not support treating the sharepic’s precise casualty figures as verified.

Griekse militairen vallen Turkije binnen.

The claim concerned a night-time video of a military column, shared online as showing Greek troops crossing into Turkey after the February 2023 earthquakes. The investigation found that the footage did show Greek military vehicles, but not an incursion into Turkey: it located the scene in Thessaloniki, Greece, about 270 kilometres from the Turkish border. The review notes that the video showed a Greek flag on a tank, while the street setting and visible shop sign pointed to Thessaloniki rather than Turkey or the border area. To check the location, the investigators used the shop name visible in the footage, searched for “Mymed Greece,” and compared the resulting location with Google Street View. They report that the shop and street buildings matched, as did smaller details outside the shop. This places the filmed column in Thessaloniki, rather than establishing a movement into Turkey. The review also identifies clues connecting the vehicles to Greek parade events. A tank in the footage bore the number “200” within the Greek flag. The investigation says that marking was used on two military vehicles in connection with the 2021 bicentennial of Greek independence. It considers the footage likely to have been recorded shortly before or after the Thessaloniki parade on 28 October 2021, while noting that the original Facebook recording could not be immediately found. The location and event clues therefore contradict the claim that the video shows troops entering Turkey after the 2023 earthquakes. (S1: “Op 00:15 is te zien dat het getal
