The photos show Palestinians faking injuries to mislead international media and public opinion

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns photos circulated during the Hamas-Israel conflict that appear to show a girl receiving injury makeup and then being carried on a stretcher. The review says the images were presented as evidence that Palestinians were faking injuries to mislead international media and public opinion. Its investigation traces the images to a video shared by Ofir Gendelman, whom the review identifies as a spokesperson for the Israeli prime minister. The review reports that watching the video revealed it to be behind-the-scenes footage from a Lebanese short film titled “The Reality,” rather than documentation of Palestinians staging injuries. To check the film’s provenance, the investigators searched for information about it and found the director Mahmoudramzi’s Instagram account, where the short film had been uploaded on 28 October 2023. They say the same people shown in the viral screenshots are identifiable in that film. The review also describes corroborating material from people involved in the production: actors featured in the clip shared the film on their Instagram accounts, and actor rami.jardali posted behind-the-scenes footage on 29 October, tagging the director and fellow actor Omar. The post’s Arabic description translates as “Backstage, Backstage.” Taken together, the reported match between the viral images and the film, plus the production-related posts, supports the conclusion that the images were taken from a film set and were misrepresented as real injuries.

Western and Israeli accounts cast doubt on the fact that a young man from Gaza was injured as a result of the occupation’s bombing. He commented on the video by saying, “Even his mother didn’t believe him.”

Publisher’s rating: Misleading, the video isn’t a staged scene, but rather a real scene of a wounded man inside Nasser Hospital trying to reassure his mother, who was terrified to see him injured, according to what was confirmed to us by the video’s documentarian, photographer Muhammad Awad.

The post described by dpa alleged that a girl had “miraculously” survived three attacks in Gaza while wearing the same clothes, using a montage that showed her being carried by different men. The investigation traced those images to a rescue in Aleppo, Syria, rather than to separate incidents in Gaza. Dpa reports that a reverse-image search led to an NBC News article about a bombing in Aleppo in late August 2016. The middle montage image appeared there and was credited to Getty Images, with a photograph by AFP photographer Ameer al Halbi. Searching the photographer’s Getty Images profile led dpa to the other two montage images; their captions place them in eastern Aleppo on August 27, 2016. The apparent changes in who was carrying the girl are explained by other images and video of the same rescue. Dpa says a further photograph on the photographer’s profile showed the man in a white helmet handing the child to a man in a checked shirt. A Sky News video of the rescue also showed the checked-shirt man passing her to a man in yellow. This evidence identifies the montage as moments from one handoff, not documentation of three separate Gaza attacks. Dpa also notes that the post and linked blog provided no evidence that Hamas had circulated the old Syrian photographs as propaganda.
