The claim
The Central Government has returned the Tamil Nadu Government’s metro proposals asking for basic clarifications. The same routine process followed for Bangalore Metro Extension, Agra, and Patna. Nothing unusual. The State Government simply has to correct the files and re-submit them like every other government does. But instead of doing this straightforward administrative task, the Chief Minister has gone on a full-blown rant, straight out of a script for a PR Minister. And isn't it predictable that he chooses to politicise a non-issue just when the Prime Minister is visiting Tamil Nadu? The Chief Minister's new found “love” for the Coimbatore and Madurai Metro projects reeks of irony when several other manifesto promises remain unfulfilled. Maybe a post-Bihar realisation that the DMK's days are numbered. The fear is real, and it shows. (P.S.: The next government will take utmost care and administrative efforts to complete the Coimbatore and Madurai Metros. Worry not, CM Sir.)
Additional context
The reporting describes the returned project reports as citing population eligibility and also questions about ridership projections—not simply requests for basic clarifications. It says revised reports were expected to be prepared and resubmitted after consultations. [S1][S3]
The reporting notes that comparisons with other cities were disputed: a BJP spokesperson said the relevant population figures included adjoining suburban areas and exceeded the threshold in those cases. [S2]
